Steve Update

We headed to the doctor's office yesterday for a follow-up appointment with Dr. Graham Reedy. The visit was very informative. Dr. Reedy's assistant has a "passion" for concussions, so he spent a long time taking Steve's story and symptoms and then filling us in on what we can expect.

Basically he said that after a concussion there is Post Concussion Syndrome, which is the time following the head injury. Everything Steve has been experiencing (tires easily after concentrating on something for too long, lack of emotion, piecy memories, etc.) sounds really normal for this type of concussion. He said the most important thing is to be patient as it can take up to 2 years for a complete and full recovery. Most likely, it will be more like 3 to 6 weeks before he really feels back to normal but the brain can take a long time to fully heal. We're still asking people to pray for a full recovery as there is still a small, very rare chance that there could be some bleeding in the brain 7-14 days after the accident. (I hate when they tell you everything that could happen, because that's all I can think about now. Uh.) Today he's going back to the doctor to take a test on the computer with some "Concussion Software" that they are testing out. It will measure his cognitive level over time to see how he's healing.

Steve has been back at work the last 2 days and has been really great at gaging when he needs to come home and rest. (However, I do have to say that I have sure been appreciating his leaders, committee and fellow YL staffers who have responded via email saying, "Steve--Get off your computer and go to bed!!) He's doing a good job listenting to his body and he's trying to do a good job at listening to his wife!
